FOLLOWING the initial open-heart surgery in November last year, Pacific Specialists Healthcare Hospitals have been inundated with enquiries from patients in the Pacific, says cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Sanjeev Khulbey.
Dr Khulbey had recently conducted a marathon of open-heart surgeries from February 23 to February 28 in the largest state-of-the-art 130-bed specialty private hospital in Nadi.
For the second time since open-heart surgeries started at PSH hospitals in Nadi, Dr Khulbey and his team of highly trained cardiology specialists had carried out a quadruple graft heart by-pass surgery on a 50-year-old patient from Nausori.
“The first such complex quadruple graft heart bypass surgery we did in Fiji was in January and that was even more challenging because the patient declined to accept any blood transfusion due to her religious beliefs as a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation,” Dr Khulbey said.
“This time around the procedure was much easier but still a complex one as I believe these are the first two such cases of quadruple bypass that have been successfully carried out in Fiji.”
He said since the initial open-heart surgery in November last year, PSH Hospitals has been receiving enquiries from patients not only in Fiji but across the Pacific Island nations.
PSH Hospitals founder and chief executive officer Parvish Kumar said these complex procedures were only possible in Fiji following the commissioning of the multi-million-dollar cardiology department and operation theatre in November last year.
“Since last year, the hospital has given renewed leases of life to many heart patients who all were discharged within five-days of their delicate procedures carried out by a team of highly trained and experienced cardiothoracic specialists led by Dr Sanjeev Khulbey who has thirty years of experience as a cardiothoracic surgeon,” Mr Kumar said.
“The continuous open-heart surgeries for six-days straight in February proved to be very successful and the number of patients keep increasing each month further demonstrating the level of confidence that the patients and their family members have on PSH Hospitals.”
