POSITIVE response and submissions were made at the public consultation over the Registration of the Sex Offenders Bill 2018 in Macuata this afternoon.
Alvick Maharaj, chairperson of the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights on the Registration of the Sex Offenders Bill 2018 thanked the community for making good use of the opportunity to make their submissions known.
In reiterating the purpose of the Bill, Mr Maharaj said only authorised organisations such as the police, Ministry of Education and Social Welfare would have access to the register.
“The objective of this Act is to establish a register containing information on sex offenders to enable specified agencies to monitor sex offenders,” he said.
In making her submission, well known farmer and sardar Akisi Vinaka told the committee that the Bill was a need.
“First of all, we are happy to have this Bill and I support it so we can protect our women and children,” she said.
“Sometimes I listen to the radio and I hear of news about sexual offense or rape and sometimes I wish I had a gun to shoot down the man or boy who did it because we know the women and girls can be our children or mothers.
“So today I’m really happy and in Lagalaga I have never heard that somebody raped but people come from different areas during cane harvesting and bring labourers to stay.”
