LANDLORDS are not allowed to increase rent for residential tenancy after the extension of the rental freeze order from today.

This has been confirmed by the Consumer Council of Fiji who said that between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019, a person must not change rental charges of flats, houses ain respect of letting or continued letting or ground rentals.

The council said any premises rented out for the first time were not subject to the Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (Rent Increase Restriction on Residential and Ground Rent) Order 2018.

However, any increase within the freeze period was restricted.

The council reminded landlords that any increase without FCCC’s intervention and approval would be deemed illegal and carried a spot fine of up to $2000.

The council said  they had received numerous complaints over the years about landlords who used various tactics such as renovation to increase rent.

The Council advised tenants to act responsibly and read and understand the tenancy agreement before moving into a rental property.
