Vidhya Lakhan is concerned about the lull in golf because of the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

The president of Golf Fiji is skeptical that most major golf tournaments that were supposed to be held during the first half of the year had been halted because of the pandemic.

“There is nothing happening in Golf Fiji at the national level as a result of COVID-19,” Lakhan said.

“Our national calendar has been severely affected by the second wave of coronavirus. All the golf clubs in the country are closed at the moment as per the government directives regarding sports restrictions.”

The veteran sports administrator said a number of major events had been rescheduled to the second half of the year.

“The annual East versus West golf tournament that was scheduled for Sunday, May 30, has been deferred indefinitely. We will have to reschedule all national tournaments for Golf Fiji.”

He said the dates for the Fiji Open golf championship had also been changed.

“It will be played from October 16 to 18 now at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club course on Denarau Island. It is the most prestigious event on our calendar,” he said.
