MEMBERS of the US Embassy in Suva will soon get an access to a new facility at their existing embassy compound in Tamavua.

This is after a ground breaking ceremony for the foundation of the embassy’s new warehouse and recreational facilities was held yesterday.

The ceremony was organized by the State Department’s Overseas Building Operations(OBO) and by the main project contractor, Arkel.

Embassy Charge d’Affaires Michael Goldman thanked everyone for inviting him to do the ground breaking ceremony.

“This, of course, is for the new warehouse, service compound access facility and recreational facility, including a new half-size basketball court. Although, normally, a ground breaking ceremony is held at the beginning of the project and just before mobilization of manpower equipment and materials, we are pleased to see that the foundation for the warehouse has already started at full speed and post is looking for as early finish as possible, so that we can start utilizing the anticipated facilities,” Mr Goldman said.

The embassy staff received an overview of the project planning and status with the project being relatively advanced, having commenced in late November 2017, and was currently estimated as 34 per cent complete.

Wastewater treatment and perimeter wall construction had been in progress for months with the foundation excavation expected to begin next month.

When complete, the project will include a warehouse, affiliated maintenance shops, recreational facility with half-basketball and volleyball court, and a service entrance.

The facility is expected to be completed by November 2020.
