THE saying, “Your past, no matter how bad it was, does not define your future. The choices and actions you make today will ultimately define who you will eventually become”, rings true for Fiji 7s player Sevuloni Mocenacagi.
Mocenacagi was not selected by coach Ben Ryan for the Rio Olympics in 2016.
The Nukuilau, Navosa giant copped a 12-match ban during the January leg of the Super 7s Series in 2021. He threw the ball at referee Paula Racaca.
He was banned from joining the Fiji 7s team, which prevented him from participating at the Olympic Games in 2021.
He never gave up.
He never let his actions stop him from playing the sport he loved and signed with French Pro D2 Club USON Nevers as a medical replacement effective immediately as an injury replacement for Fijian centre Alivereti Loaloa.
Three years later, the former Nadroga centre during the 2020 Skipper Cup put his controversy behind him and is now one of coach Osea Kolinisau’s go-to man.
He claimed silver at this year’s Paris Olympics.
While he played a crucial role in Fiji’s revived journey in the HSBC SVNS 2025 Series, Yamacia Rugby Club in its Facebook post praised the lanky forward for his passion for the sport.
“But you look back, he missed two Olympics,” the post reads.
“Over the decades he’s been with Fiji Rugby.
“Mocenacagi is still doing it for his country and his people regardless.
“What a legend.”
Meanwhile, last week Mocenacagi was part of the team that created history by winning the Dubai 7s after nine years.
Mocenacagi and head coach Kolinisau were part of the team that last won in 2015.
