THE organisers of the annual Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s have decided to give exposure and promotion to rugby played by Fijians of Indian descents.

As a result, the oldies category has been scrapped for this year’s event.

This will allow the inclusion of a category classed as the ‘Indo Fijian’ to be slotted in the competition schedule.

Nawaka Rugby Club president Eparama Sailo said five teams made up of Fijians with Indian descents had registered.

Sailo said there were places for more teams in the category.

“We are looking for more because we want to boost rugby in this category,” he said.

“We want to give them exposure. “I believe that they are looking to get recognition from the Fiji Rugby Union to participate in tournaments in Asia.

“So the Nawaka 7s is the platform for them to play, test their skills and for their selectors to pick a squad to go abroad to get international exposure.”
