The right measure of success for the Tourism Recovery Package is the number of tourists that are attracted to Fiji and will get on a plane to come to the island nation, says former Reserve Bank of Fiji governor and Unity Fiji Party leader Savenaca Narube.

Mr Narube made the comments in a statement issued today responding to the Government’s recent announcement that more than 140 hotels and properties had showed interest in the rescue package, provided in the 2020-2021 national budget.

“Of course, these hoteliers will grab the package with both arms. Who would not?” Mr Narube said.

“But the number of hotels that accept the package is not the measure of success of the recovery package. And the Minister should know that. It is just propaganda,” he added.

“The right measure of success for the rescue package is the number of tourists that is attracted to Fiji and will get on a plane to come here. And we know that this will not happen any time soon. Tragically, our first corona virus-related death has made sure of that.

“Therefore, in my view, the impact of the government’s incentives on tourist arrivals, jobs and the economy will be ineffective.”

Mr Narube said the Government was simply giving money away at a time when many of Fiji’s families were suffering.
