A FITTING farewell was accorded to renowned The Fiji Times senior sports journalist Maciu ‘Mac’ Malo in Lautoka yesterday.
People from all walks of life gathered to farewell a loving friend, father, son and a renowned sports writer who has been known for many years for his sports articles.
Tears flowed freely as eulogies were delivered at the Natabua Methodist Church to describe the life of a person who touched the lives of many people.
The Fiji Times editor in chief Fred Wesley said Malo, who was always known to many as Mac, was a person who would always be the bright spark on a dull or dark day.
“Mac joined the The Fiji Times newsroom in 2010 hot on the heels of the other love of his life, Baljeet Singh, Wesley said.
“The two were inseparable, where Baljeet is, you will find Maciu not far off from him. They were attracted to each other and their special bond forged at the Fiji Sun newsroom soared to greater heights at the The Fiji Times west newsroom.
“Maciu would tell the inside story and Baljeet will capture the images that brought these stories to life.”
Wesley said their special bond gave Fiji and the world a unique insight into the magic of Fiji 7s rugby.
Wesley said Mac was not just one of The Fiji Times man, but someone who was always ready to lend a helping hand. He added his wife had shared that even in his final moments.
A close media colleague of Malo, Christopher Chand said Maciu was not just a friend, but was someone who they had always shared great bonds with especially during their journalism days in covering sports.
He added Maciu would sorely be missed.
The Tubalevu, Namara, Tailevu native was laid to rest at the Tavakubu Cemetery in Lautoka yesterday.
