Miri sets new record

MIRIAMA Senokonoko managed to set a new schools record for the New Mexico Military Institute last weekend.

The 20-year-old is on a sports scholarship at NMMI and she competed in the McMurry Warhawk Track and Field invitational which featured 12 Texas universities and two international teams.

Senokonoko hopped stepped and jumped 11.30 metres breaking the old record of 9.99m set in 2007.

According the athlete’s mother, Ana Senokonoko, they had communicated via Skype the night before.

“Miriama was supposed to run in the 200m and the 400m race but she had injured herself earlier sho she was advised to rehabilitate properly before running,” she said.

“Her scholarship ends in May and she will be returning to Fiji. I am hoping she gets a sports scholarship with a university there so she can become a better athlete.

“Miriama wants to be part of the athletic team to the Pacific Games but she has not been contacted by Athletics Fiji although her name was published in the newspapers but she has not been personally contacted so she is unsure how these things work.

“But she would love to represent Fiji.”

Miriama Senokonoko currently holds the record for the Junior Girls 400m set in 2009, Intermediate Girls 400m set in 2011 and the Inter Girls Triple jump with a distance of 11.70m in the Coca-Cola Games.
