THE Fiji Chess Federation (FCF) completed another successful tournament last weekend with candidate master Manoj Kumar winning the first Telecom-sponsored Fiji Chess Championship.
Kumar won on the second tie-break after a draw on the scoreboard with fellow Olympiad player Taione Sikivou at 4.5 out of five points.
Tournament arbiter Hilda Vukikomoala hailed the tournament a success and highlighted plans for developing the sport in Fiji and the region.
“Chess is a growing sport with almost 190 countries participating in a World Chess Olympiad,” said Vukikomoala.
“In the next five years, we hope to tap further into our local talents and take the sport to a new level in the South Pacific.
“Performances of upcoming players such as William Bennion, Rudr Prasad, Tanvi Prasad and Avinesh Nadan is always encouraging for the sport.
“We are happy to conclude a successful tournament courtesy of Telecom Fiji which kindly sponsored the event.”
