Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu has thanked public members for assisting an officer arrest a drunkard in Lautoka yesterday.
He said said police officers face varying situations every day and they assess the situation before responding.
“We truly appreciate those who came to the assistance of the officer and together they managed to subdue the individual,” he said.
“Officers also must be mindful with the level of force they apply as it could lead to a report lodged against the officer.
“All officers undergo defence and combat training during the Basic Recruits Course and ways to apprehend a suspect. “Officers are also taught through various human rights training offered by our law enforcement partners and stakeholders.”
The nine-second video circulated on social media showed that the drunken man was knocked to the ground by another person from behind.
He is in police custody for allegedly assaulting the police officer who was assisted by members of the public.
The video which has gone viral on Facebook depicts both person’s engaged in a fist fight.
According to Police, the man was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
