Tragedy struck a family in Balabala Crescent, in Newtown at around midday on Saturday when a bedridden man was killed in a house fire.
The wooden and concrete house started from a burnt newspaper used by the son of the 58-year-old victim who tried to remove a beehive from the ceiling.
According to witnesses, the victim had locked the door of his room and could not be rescued on time.
Divisional Police Commander South (DPC/S) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Wate Vocevoce said, the intensity of the fire made it difficult to evacuate the deceased.
He said a joint investigation was in progress between the National Fire Authority (NFA) and police.
