A 53-YEAR-OLD former television personality who is alleged to have spread false information on social media in relation to COVID-19 has been granted bail on strict conditions.

Nemani Bainivalu appeared yesterday at the Suva Magistrates Court charged with one count of malicious act breaching the Public Order Act.

It is alleged Mr Bainivalu uploaded a malicious and misleading post on his Facebook account about COVID-19 that caused anxiety and alarm.

The magistrate issued a stop departure order against the accused and ordered that Mr Bainivalu report to the Nabua Police Station once a week.

Police prosecutor Sgt Gandhi Prasad had objected to bail on the grounds that the matter was of national interest and the post had caused panic in the community.

The matter has been adjourned to May 18.
