In the wake of the Fiji Residents’ triumphant 22-10 win over Samoa at the HFC Bank Stadium on Saturday, head coach Vula Dakuitoga said the win was particularly meaningful as it offered a chance to redeem last year’s loss to Samoa.
“We’re really happy about today’s result,” he said.
“The game against Samoa was something we wanted to win, especially after that tough loss last year in the Solomons Islands.
“It was a chance to repay our fans and to show the hard work we’ve put in.”
Dakuitoga praised the squad’s effort and commitment, noting the importance of the win not only for the present but for the future of Fiji’s rugby league.
“The boys performed really well,” he added.
“I told them before the game that there was nothing else but to win. I hope today’s result has an impact on the Fiji Residents in the years to come, inspiring the players and encouraging more support for rugby league at home.”
When asked about the team’s next steps, Dakuitoga explained that the Fiji Residents would now take a short break, with plans to engage in further international competition next year.
“The association is looking to involve other Pacific nations like Samoa, Tonga, and the Cook Islands to create a new format for regular matches,” he said.
Dakuitoga closed his remarks by extending gratitude to the team, his coaching staff, and all those who supported the Fiji Residents throughout the competition.
“To all the boys, the coaching staff, and the friends supporting us, thank you.
“It’s been a wonderful journey, and we’re looking forward to celebrating this win together.”
