New 7s talent

FIJI has a load of talented young men when it comes to 7s rugby.

Another lad has stepped up and this time it’s the captain of the Police team Suliano Volivoli.

Looking at his physique, he is a big boy. He joins the Fiji team to play in the Los Angeles leg of the series.

National 7s coach Gareth Baber said, “Volivoli just loves to work, he’s got a great work ethic and that’s what we love about him”.

The captain of the Police 7s team said he thought he was going to make it to the first leg because he gave his best in training.

“Little did I know God had this one for me and I receive it and will show the coach and my brothers in the team that I deserve it,” said Volivoli.

The team departed for Los Angeles last night.

Vinaka Suliano, go and fly Fiji’s flag.

Act now please

I WRITE to raise a very deep concern which has been bothering me for a while.

This is in respect to the high number of children who have lately been seen wandering around the car parks of shopping complexes choking money from people.

This is a very common sight weather it be in the streets of Suva City or major shopping complexes such as Centrepoint, Nakasi and Nausori.

What aggravates the concern is that these children are found loitering even in the weekdays when they are supposed to be in schools.

The major issue is, why these children are there and where are their parents?

Is this neglect from parents or the child is of such an unruly behaviour that parents have lost control over them?

If it is neglect from parents, then they should be dealt with in accordance with the law.

If the child is of unruly behaviour, then the Ministry of Social Welfare, Children and Poverty Alleviation should intervene and facilitate for the service of institutions such as the Monfort Boys School or the Dilkusha Home in such circumstances where it is revealed that the parents of these children are not in a position to look after them or to nurture them in a manner which is acceptable in wider society.

This issue is indeed very grave because the Government has provided free education to all children in Fiji right up to secondary schools, and having to see children not going to school does not leave behind any reason for justification of such.

I humbly request the Ministry of Social Welfare, Children and Poverty Alleviation to look into this matter because these children are our future.

We all need to work hand in hand to ensure that these children grow up to make a better life for themselves. It is highly probable that these children will get influenced and eventually get associated with the wrong group, finding themselves on the wrong side of the law.

This has a significant economic effect because these children are supposedly our future and if our future has already started to look so bleak, what can we expect advancing further into our future when these children grow up to be adults. Act now before it is too late.

Mother Language Day

PARLIAMENTARIANS congratulated each other in Parliament (21/2/20).

Yet they can’t speak their mother tongue in Parliament.

Parliament star

I THINK Niko Nawaikula is the best performer whenever he comes on the picture in Parliament.

I saw most of the government members laughing and smiling when he said you people don’t have any money.

Then he said something about (dinau) borrow here, borrow there.

Birthday segment

THE compilations by John Kamea in the 150th birthday segment of yesterday’s The Fiji Times are excellent.

I particularly liked the January to June 1911 extracts where not one mention of a politician was made.

Perhaps we can avoid mentioning them for the next six months in all media forms, I am sure the country will not miss hearing about their antics.
