Super game

THE Highlanders versus the Reds was a cracker of a match. Coming from behind the Highlanders beat the Reds in a tough game. One forward pass, not picked up by the match officials put paid to the Reds’ gallant effort. I look forward to the other games. ALLEN LOCKINGTON, Kava Place Waiyavi, Lautoka

Rugby vs soccer

OUR rugby boys are in big demand overseas. Some are also playing for tier one national teams such as France, New Zealand, the Aussies, and England. Congrats FRU for your guidance, for grassroot development, vision and foremost for the passion and pride. I just don’t know what to say about soccer. All I can urge our Sports Minister to do is throw the current administrators out of each district…. starting with those at the FFA noble house. The difference is clear. Rugby is in the top eight … soccer is about there … but from the opposite end. Again congrats to both the organisations for their achievements. SHARIFF SHAH, Savusavu

Teaching profession

EVERY government must identify the loopholes and patch it, any government for that matter must investigate and find solutions on why there is a lack of interest in the teaching profession as there are many contributing factors which we all know. There is a general lack of teachers for specialised subjects and it is a niche market with a different pay packet for the qualified ones, it is up to the individual whether one will take up a program in the teaching profession or not and to make it lucrative our government must drawup a pathway for young and middle-aged Fijians so they can know what they are into. It is very simple and there is no sense in blaming a government as gone are the old days where a teacher can qualify to teach many subjects in a school in different classes even if they are not qualified to do so but is the normal practice and I believe our government is on the right path in finding a solution to this problem. The blame game attitude is wrong, it should be solutions and solutions in moving forward together as a nation, my children have gone into the medical, legal and military fields, but I have managed to convince two of my grandchildren to go into one of those specialised teaching fields to holistically contribute long term to the problem. Although they can change but I do hope they will maintain their promise to me. TUKAI LAGONILAKEBA, Namaka, Nadi

Something in people

SO, stop dillydallying. Get out there, do it to them before they do it to you. For if they did, it will “knock the wind out of your sails”. So said an esteemed orator, or was it speaker? Legacy is not leaving something for people, it’s leaving something in people. MANOJ LAL PATEL, Drasa Avenue, Lautoka

Student protest

I AM so proud of university students staging protests regarding grievances with their administrators. Many universities seem to turn a deaf ear to students’ needs thus interfering with their need to complete or get a quality education. One can only imagine the long list of students highly affected and all the unreported cases of administration and financial abuse. To strip away the chance of greater dignity and humanity for these young and older ones too need to be taken quite seriously. Could it be that administrators cannot comprehend students’ requests and thus need further training? This is tremendous training ground for students entering the workforce. If they experience injustice at tertiary levels, how will they look forward to entering the workforce? They will have no hope for the future. Thus, their fight is for their future and the rest of those who have experienced injustice by selfserving administrators. JOAN MCGOON, Jetpoint, Martintar, Nadi

Child obesity

THE exchange of views are underway about child obesity. One of the major reasons for child obesity is that children spend less time playing outside the house and staying active. They spend long periods of time using computers, playing video games or watching television. To top it up, now there are smartphones. Staying physically inactive leaves unused energy in the body, most of which gets stored as fat. Food is consumed daily. Physical activities are a must daily. Secondary school athletics competitions are in progress. Students are seen training in schools, on roads and in back yards. Alone, pairs and groups. Mornings, evenings and weekends. You name it. It is happening. It will continue until the national finals. Then it all reduces. End of sporting competitions should not mean end of physical activities. Health is in a constant competition with life. If health deteriorates, life shortens. A healthy lifestyle will sustain a prolonged healthy life. It starts from young. Drug raids

THE police force seems to be getting better each day as they continue to discover drugs almost on daily basis, and I would like to take another opportunity in thanking our police commissioner and his offi cers for a job well done . Also thanks to the informers and hopefully more will come forward and more drugs will be discovered. As I have stated after the festive season that the police force needs a bonus or pay rise for their continuous working up to par. The police officers deserve an appreciation package for their performance. And for  the drug dealer as the commissioner has stated the “… those involved in the drug trade is that we will get to you”. Vinaka to the police force and for making Fiji a better place to live in. TOMASI BOGINISO, Nasinu
