FIJI-based boxer Joseph Kwadjo featured in the highlight bout during the Mahindra Super 8 Boxing tournament in Auckland last Saturday.
New Zealand Boxing Federation referee and judge Faiyaz Khan said Kwadjo competed well in the ring against Australian number one cruiserweight boxer Brad Pitt.
He said despite Pitt winning the fight on points, Kwadjo fought very well.
“Super 8 is a new format of boxing where eight top fighters in the same weight fight each other over three rounds after the first 4 fights only 4 fighters progress through to semi finals, with two semi-finals fought only 2 fights then progress to finals for the big prize money,” he said.
Pitt walked away with NZ $150,000 (F$224,997) after winning the tournament.
In the other fight of the night, Fijian Kali Meehan won the WBA and WBO heavyweight belt from Kiwi Shane Cameron on points. Though the fight started with both boxers exchanging good blows towards the end of the fight Kali came out better hitting Shane with blows hard to recover from.
At the end of the bout judges scored the fight as follows. Judge Steve Miles had 98 -92, Judge Laurie Glosier had 97 -93 and Judge Faiyaz Khan had 97 -93, all in favour of Kali.
