THE Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship is gaining popularity since its introduction to Fiji six years ago.

With the successful competition this week by the Korean Embassy in Fiji more athletes, especially young people in Fiji and from around the region are taking up the sport.

Korean ambassador to Fiji, Shinhee Cho believes tae kwon do can serve as foundation in enhancing people’s lives and relationship between countries in the region and Korea.

“The Korean Embassy will continuously support tae kwon do promotion in Fiji and the Pacific Islands countries through close co-operation with relevant ministries and authorities,” Cho said.

She congratulates the Fiji Taekwondo Association team which won five medals (1 silver, 4 bronze) during the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa.

“The Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship featured two categories: sparring and poomsae (a series of attacking and defensive movements against an imaginary opponent).

“Approximately 160 tae kwon do trainees joined the competition. This event aims to elevate Fiji’s tae kwon do practitioners’ skills and contribute to foster future Olympics medallists of Fiji. Furthermore, the competition could act as a catalyst for more people to learn and practise tae kwon do in Fiji.”
