INDIA has reassured its support behind Pacific Island Countries in their rally to address climate change considering its effects on both small and large economies.
Officiating at the opening of the Climate Capacity Building Workshop in Nadi today, India’s high commissioner to Fiji Vishvas Sapkal told journalists from across the region that many lives were lost and properties damaged adding that even though Pacific people have shown resilience, the role of Government agencies, Civil Society Organisations and the media was huge to fight these calamities.
Mr Sapkal said the media played a fundamental role in cascading information regarding climatic and weather reports in order to keep the masses informed.
“Media representatives from across the world play an important part in disseminating information, however it is equally important that the information that they produce is both well researched and reliable as the consequences of misinformation can be drastic and even fatal, ” he said.
Over 20 journalists across the region are attending the workshop at Nadi’s Tabia International Hotel which ends on Friday this week.
The workshop is organised by the Pacific Environment Journalist Network and co-funded by the United Nations Development Program and the Government of India.
