Fiji’s independence is a constant reminder that true democracy must reflect a society that encourages and supports the inclusion of diverse voices of citizens heard in a consistently changing environment.

This, according to Citizens’ Constitutional Forum CEO Louchrisha Hussain in her Fiji Day message.

She said the recognition and protection of people’s basic human rights and freedoms must be protected and promoted as Fiji progressed.

“The increase in human rights violations, violence, and criminal activities in Fiji is a true reflection of Fiji’s current social status, thus these shortcomings illustrate Fiji’s journey on the empowerment of human rights,” said Ms Hussain.

She said citizens should understand their human rights, and exercise it responsibly, and the State must commit to the protection and promotion of human rights for all.

Ms Hussain claimed all forms of human rights violations and disrespect for fundamental freedoms were on the rise including violence against women, and girls, persons living with disabilities, members of the LGBTQI, and marginalised groups.

She said while crimes were increasing, the civil society sector’s space continued to grow more restrictive, and she claimed a contributing factor was the “rapidly changing legislative environment that lacks extensive public participation”.
