Members of the Opposition have referred to what the Government does as “freebies” and this implies that people getting the assistance do not really need it, says Minister for Infrastructure, Meteorological Services, Lands and Mineral Resources Jone Usamate.

“Are they suggesting that we do not provide food rations, that we do not subsidise water and electricity rates for those whose family income is less than $30,000 a year, that we do not provide sanitary pads for our young girls, that we do not provide assistance to purchase data for school children at this who are so dependent on computers and being online,” he said in Parliament.

“Is this official SOLDEPA doctrine? Is this your grand plan to deny assistance to those who need it?”

He said the assistance was not freebies but was looking after the needs of those who needed it and putting the interest of ordinary Fijians first.

“Government cares for all in Fiji, seen in education, social welfare, water, electricity, unemployment benefits, assistance for micro, small and medium enterprises – these are not freebies.

“This is looking after the needs of those who need it and putting first the interests of ordinary Fijians.”
