Former Vodafone Fiji Bati and NRL star Jarryd Hayne is proud to be back home and is excited about the upcoming physical game this weekend, as Fiji prepares to take on Papua New Guinea.
Hayne, who returned to the country this week, will be not playing for the side but is assisting with the team’s preparation.
He expressed his happiness at being able to help and contribute in any way possible, especially with the team’s attack strategies.
“It’s great to be back home, Wise spoke with me to come help so said that I’m more than happy to come over, to fill in wherever possible, and also to help with the teams attack plays,” said Hayne.
Reflecting on the significance of promoting rugby league in Fiji, Hayne highlighted the cultural importance of the sport and its ability to bring people together.
He praised the NRL for organizing the championship and acknowledged the growth of Fijian players in the league, emphasising the celebration of culture that events like this can provide.
Hayne acknowledged the formidable nature of the Papua New Guinea team.
“For PNG is probably the only nation in the world where it doesn’t matter who they play, you just know they’re going to be tough.
“Their culture of rugby league is all about just brute force, you know, they love running straight.
“They love the physical stuff, and it doesn’t matter who they pick. You just know what to expect regardless.”
Hayne also shared his thoughts on the Fiji Bati squad, noting the presence of several high-profile rugby league stars.
“It’s great for the boys to come back, because it’s a long season, and these boys have been going for close to 11 months now. For them to come back at the end of the year and kind of put their preseason back to participate in the championships is awesome.
“We should get a good crowd, and there should be plenty of talent on display on Saturday night.”
The Fiji Bati will kick off its Pacific Championships campaign against the PNG Kumuls this Saturday at 8.10pm at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
