Putting God first, family second and footy third proved to be a guiding principle that led to the remarkable success of Vodafone Fiji Bati in their recent victory against Cook Islands during the second round of the Pacific Bowl Championship at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Bati centre Waqa Blake, 30, highlighted the pivotal role of this motto in the team’s triumphant performance, resulting in a resounding 56-6 win.
The significance of playing in Fiji after a lengthy absence was not lost on Blake, who expressed deep pride in representing his country.
“It was a good win, we bounced back from last weekend, it’s very disappointing against Papua New Guinea but to get this result is amazing,” said Blake.
“We haven’t played here in Fiji for some time now. It means a lot just to see the fans out here and to sing the national anthem, I’m very proud.”
“The team’s unwavering commitment to their values of faith, family, and rugby league was a driving force behind our success, exemplified in our steadfast belief in self-confidence and unity.”
Blake emphasised the importance of belief in oneself and the team’s ethos, urging Cook Islands to bounce back in the upcoming match against PNG, while expressing hope for their future success.
“This match is a good warm-up for the Cook Islands, and I hope they bounce back next week against PNG, and they get the win, and it will give us a chance to be back in Australia.”
Blake acknowledged the role of God in providing strength and guidance to the team and extended appreciation to the fans for their unwavering support.
The PNG Kumuls will face the Cook Islands in Port Moresby this Sunday at 3pm.
