FIJI Women’s Crisis Centre co-ordinator Shamima Ali says she expects a more inclusive budget for the Ministry of Women Poverty Alleviation and Social Welfare in the coming financial year.

She said she felt that over the years the budget was not as much as it should be especially in terms of allocation for initiatives dealing with domestic violence against women.

Other areas she said needed more attention were the social welfare sector which was needed in helping protect the elderly and children.

“I believe they should decrease the allocation of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and increase the budget for the Fiji Police Force,” she said.

Ms Ali said the increase should focus on the area of training for police officers in tackling cases of abuse of women and children. She said she welcomed the $100,000 allocation for the domestic violence support fund (DVSF) under the 2018/2019 National Budget.

The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation had been allocated $133.0 million in the 2018/2019 budget, while the RFMF was allocated a total of $103.3m and the Fiji Police Force $193.5m.
