THE Fiji Teachers Union has called for the draft Educators Protection Policy to be implemented as soon as possible.

Union general secretary Muniappa Goundar said they would be meeting with Education Minister Aseri Radrodro to discuss the draft policy.

“The Educator Protection Policy, we want that activated as soon as possible,” Mr Goundar said.

“We all know that there have been incidents where teachers have been abused so this policy will ensure their safety.

“I cannot stress enough how important this policy is, and we need it implemented and enacted soon, and we hope to have a discussion with the minister about that as well.”

Mr Goundar also highlighted the withdrawal of the draft Education Bill in the last Parliament sitting.

“We will be having a meeting with the Minister for Education on the withdrawal of the draft Bill, and I hope we can have it passed in Parliament because the faster that it is done the better for all.

“The draft Bill is important because it outlines a lot of laws that have been updated and modernised.

“As a union, this draft Bill have a great deal of impact on the education system.”
