The big one on the front page of The Fiji Times’ edition for Wednesday, May 18 is interesting. It is about an incident that was captured on video, and this went viral on social media.

We learn that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions says it has not sanctioned any charges against the Labasa bus driver featured in the video being allegedly assaulted by a police officer.

He appeared before the Labasa Magistrates Court charged with failing to give his name and address to the officer, who has since been suspended from duty.

The ODPP was responding to a police statement saying Mr Mani was also charged with serious assault. The police statement, quoting Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho, said the charges against Mr Mani “were sanctioned following consultations with the Director of Public Prosecutions Office in Labasa”.
