FORMER Suva lord mayor Ratu Peni Volavola has called on the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) to conduct an audit on the status of Fiji’s roads.

He said in the past, municipal councils were responsible for the repair and improvement of roads within city and town boundaries.

He said there was a need for the FRA to derive a long-term strategic plan to ensure roads were properly maintained and upgraded.

Ratu Peni said previously, municipal councils had tried to find ways on how best they could maintain roads in the country.

He said one of the solutions put forward was the need to bring in road maintenance materials from overseas.

“Why can’t we buy materials from abroad?” he asked.

“I’m sure there are robust, long-lasting materials which can withstand extreme weather conditions, let alone the weight of the vehicles that are on these roads.

“We need to have a holistic approach about these things and this includes long-term planning and strategic planning in terms of budgetary allocation and materials taken into use in order to construct roads that are long-lasting.

“So that when there is adverse weather, roads are not affected.”
