A THREE-DAY course for company directors provided a platform for them to learn about getting the right balance of focus on compliance and performances with strategy and risk management.
The Australian Institute of Company Directors held its Fiji Director Training course at the Grand Pacific Hotel during which facilitator Jenny Seeto said issues that were covered during the three-day course included directors and potential directors getting an understanding of financial statements and how to interpret them.
Ms Seeto said it was highlighted by some of the directors that most of them found it difficult for most directors to interpret financial statements.
She said the training provided the participants with the knowledge and confidence to deal with financial issues and ask the right questions.
Her co-facilitator David Evans said the course was a great opportunity for directors and new directors in Fiji to really develop a framework towards good governance.
Mr Evans said one of the key requirements for any company director was to understand the financial statements.
He said the main objective of the course was giving the directors and potential directors the confidence to really understand their role and to be a really effective director.
“I think it’s about making sure that as a director they add value to the board.
“There are some very young directors here which to me is the future of Fiji,” he said.
Ms Seeto said they had a good mix of participants for the course which brought out different perspectives when it came to board discussions.
