The Fiji National University (FNU) received a donation of academic textbooks from the United States Embassy in Fiji, in conjunction with the Asia Foundation.

The donation of medical and leadership textbooks strengthens FNU’s commitment to providing high-quality education which is captured in FNU’s Strategic Plan 2021-2026 and in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4.

The donation will boost the University’s library services to provide a wider range of reading and research materials for students to use and gain valuable knowledge.

FNU’s Pro Vice-Chancellor Learning and Teaching Professor Lisa Harrison thanked the U.S. Embassy for the donation.

“The United States of America Embassy to Fiji has been an important partner of the Fiji National University library, and we are truly appreciative of your dedicated support,” said Prof Harrison.

“In an era where we are continuously engaged with screens and electronic devices, we must remember that books remain the most flexible and far-reaching medium for sharing knowledge.”

“Having access to up-to-date and high-quality books to complete training and qualifications for our students and staff in their roles is essential to ensure a better future. We can see that the valuable resources the Embassy gave us will help improve the quality of education for our students,” added the PVC Learning and Teaching.

The book donation was delivered and presented by the U.S. Embassy’s Regional Public Diplomacy Officer Ms Stephanie Fitzmaurice.

Ms Fitzmaurice said the Embassy was happy to partner with FNU on the educational programme initiatives.

“The United States recognises the importance of education and literacy. We are committed to working with our partners in Fiji to expand educational opportunities for students, men, women, and children. We value the work that the key educational institutions in Fiji, like FNU, are doing. We appreciate the chance to partner with FNU on some of our initiatives,” Ms Fitzmaurice stated.

“Recently, some of the FNU faculty were able to participate in the Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) exchange program and the International Visitor Leadership Program, both of which send promising individuals to the U.S. for short-term learning and exchange programmes.”

FNU’s University Librarian Dr Udya Shukla while acknowledging the timely donation said the books will be a great asset to current and future students.

“As we all know, libraries persevere to provide quality information and resources to all their users, so receiving such donated books will help the FNU Library fulfil the needs and demands of our students. These books are valuable and will provide our students with the necessary learning materials to help them achieve their academic aspirations,” mentioned Dr Shukla.

Fiji National University Student Association (FNUSA) representative Sheekha Chand said the donated materials will provide students with additional resources to learn from.

“The donation to the library is inspiring, which mitigates the reluctance to learn and strengthens motivation for students and staff,” she said.

FNU aims to be the premier national University providing relevant higher education, technical and vocational education and training, and research and development in Fiji.
