THE Fiji National Rugby League and Fiji Rugby Union are mourning the loss of a great mentor, teacher and leader — Epeli Lagiloa fondly known by his players as “Master”.
The master tactician who has groomed many rugby stars during his heyday was called to rest early this week at the CWM Hospital after a short illness.
Former dual international and FNRL board member Mesake Navugona said the late Fiji Bati manager, who was a great motivator, has left behind a huge vacuum.
The 69-year-old Lagiloa also played a huge role in the success of Navugona’s rugby union and rugby league career.
“He was a great mentor, preacher and one of the pioneer coaches who incorporated spiritual and physical training in Fiji,” said Navugona.
“He was a fatherly figure to the players and someone we always turned to after encountering difficulties.
“He was like a light at the end of the tunnel.”
The former Fiji Bati flyer said the late manager was the founder of rugby league in Lautoka.
“Without Master Epeli there would be no rugby league in Lautoka in the 90s.
“He was the one that started the Foodtown Lautoka Eagles rugby league team and helped former Fiji rugby reps Kalaveti Naisoro, Kaiava Salusalu and Joji Vatubua to represent Fiji Bati at the 1995 Rugby League World Cup final.
“I am honoured to be one the players taught by this great man.”
Navugona said the late fitness guru deserved to be recognised for his achievement in Fiji’s sporting contribution.
“He deserved to be inducted in the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame not only because of his achievements but the many athletes and players he had groomed to become stars.”
Some of the players nurtured by the late mentor are Waisale Serevi, the late Seru Rabeni, Kalaveti Naisoro, Navugona, Pio Tuwai, Josua Tuisova and Waisea Nacuqu.
