FIJI Cricket under-19 needs more exposure of playing cricket matches locally which will help build up their skills and confidence.

East Asia Pacific development officer Toby Cohen made the comments after the Fijian team lost out on a chance to qualify for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup.

“They need to make every opportunity to play cricket as a learning experience. More regular cricket will help enormously,” he said.

“Fiji played with lots of flair throughout the tournament, particularly with their bowling and fielding.

“Unfortunately Fiji remained winless, however the enthusiasm and passion throughout the week saw Fiji improve with each match, pushing (tournament champions) Japan very close in their final game.”

According to Cohen notable performances were from Apete Sokovagone (4 for 31 off 8) against Samoa and Ledua Gauna (4 for 40 off 10 overs) against Vanuatu.

Japan has now qualified for the first time ever as they have been confirmed winners of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup EAP Qualifier.

They will travel to South Africa in early 2020 to participate in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup after securing qualification on home soil.

Japan defeated PNG in the final.
