The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission says Fiji faces pressing issues that demand immediate attention.
Chairman Pravesh Sharma states these issues are police violence, gender-based violence, child abuse, poverty, discrimination and exploitation within the workforce including the plight of the migrant workers, and the far-reaching impacts of climate change.
“Vulnerable groups, including women, children, persons with disabilities, LGBTI persons and marginalized communities, often bear the brunt of these challenges,” said Mr Sharma.
“The time to act is now—delaying solutions only deepens inequalities and threatens the dignity and well-being of the people.”
He added Human Rights are enshrined in Fiji’s Constitution.
“Poverty, for instance, is not just a lack of resources; it is a denial of basic rights.”
“Climate change is not just an environmental issue; it is a human rights crisis threatening the livelihoods, homes, and futures of many Fijians.”
