The Fiji Bus Operators Association (FBOA) has called on the Fiji Police Force to take appropriate action against the policeman who physically assaulted a bus driver while the driver was handcuffed and seated in a bus in Labasa yesterday.

FBOA Acting President Zane Dean said “We call on the leadership of the Fiji Police Force to take appropriate action against the policeman and to seriously examine the behaviour of its officers.”

Mr Dean said the incident, which was widely witnessed and filmed at the Labasa Bus Station on Monday, May 16 demonstrates the lack of understanding of some police officers about their role and the limits to their powers.

“Bus drivers work daily to ensure the travelling public are able to move to and from their destinations and should not have to endure such treatment while carrying out their duties.

“Should a police officer need to detain any driver, there are legal and non-violent ways of detaining people and any officer who knows their job will not behave in the manner in which that Labasa officer did,” Mr Dean said.
