The people of Fiji own the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), says FBC chairman Ajay Bhai Amrit.

He said this in relation to a question from the media on whether former FBC chief executive officer Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s pay was confidential information.

Mr Amrit said the bottom line was that FBC was a public entity.

“The people of Fiji own FBC,” he said. Mr Amrit said there have been other revelations about what people in public entities were earning, and FBC was no different.

He said the public had a right to know what people in public enterprises earned, just as they did to know what members of their government earned.

“Everyone knows what the Prime Minister gets, everyone knows what the ministers get.

“I don’t see any reason why people shouldn’t see what public entities get.

“If you’re working for a public company that government funds, or partially funds, whatever it is, why shouldn’t people know?”
