Listen to this article:

EIGHT queen contestants will vie for the Duavata Crime Prevention Carnival crown in Labasa next month. Carnival’s organising committee chairperson Satish Kumar said five kings, including five teens and princess contestants would also contest at the carnival.Mr Kumar said funds raised at this year’s carnival would be used to construct a rest house at Wainigadru, Cakaudrove.

“The rest house has been on our mind for a while now and this year we plan to focus on its completion,” Mr Kumar said.

“Most of the time the people are forced to wait for long hours in Wainigadru for public transport as they travel from their villages to access services at Labasa Town.

Mr Kumar said talks were underway with police officers in the Wainigadru area to secure land for the rest house.

“Our contestants have been chosen and they have already begun training and coaching for the carnival,” he added.

This year the carnival will be held at Subrail Park in Labasa on June 30.
