Editorial comment – A traumatic experience

LIFE can be tough on some of us.

It can sometimes also depend on how we see things and perhaps the turn of events in our lives.

When Emori Raluveisoba called his elder sister at 7pm to find out where she was, he was reassured knowing his sister Vika Radinibau was on her way home.

It was just one of those things in life. You are reassured by a response.

That was supposed to be comforting. It was an instinctive reaction.

Her voice was reassurance in itself. She was headed home.

That was good. It was never meant to be though.

There are moments in time that leave an indelible impression on the mind.

They are like an imprint firmly etched in stone.

They are difficult to shrug aside.

A police officer later turned up at their home in Nasinu to relay the message to him and his sister Asenaca Vosarogo, 18, that their big sister had been rushed to hospital moments after that call.

Ms Radinibau, 25, was hit by a car while on her way home on Tuesday night and died in hospital.

When he visited the scene of the accident, Mr Raluveisoba had this overwhelming feeling his sister would not make it out of the hospital alive.

Police said the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and was in custody. Memories came flooding back for the two siblings.

Their big sister was only metres away from their home at Vesida HART in Nasinu.

They described her as someone they could look up to after the death of their mother in 2011.

Memories came flooding back for the siblings.

Mr Raluveisoba described the phase they went through after their mother’s death as a difficult one.

After years of being apart from their father, they finally found work and this year they moved into their home. He said they made plans last week to visit their mother’s grave in Navua.

As police investigations continue, perhaps it is apt that we should talk about road safety.

Every year we have campaigns that highlight road safety. However, every year we continue to have accidents.

We realise accidents happen, however, accidents can also be prevented.

We have a challenge to embrace road safety, and factor this in how we live our lives. It works both ways though. We may be aware of safety tips while someone else isn’t.

This is why it becomes a critical issue to create a very high level of awareness and appreciation for road safety.

In the end, loved ones suffer when accidents happen.

It is a traumatic experience that many struggle to get over.
