WATERWAYS and Environment Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy said a team of Dutch water experts has been deployed to Fiji to support resilience against floods and help mitigate flood issues in the Ba and Rakiraki catchments.

According to a Department of Information statement, the Dutch Disaster Risk Reducation team will contribute to understanding the flood risk factors in the Ba and Rakiraki catchments, and through informed recommendations pave the way for holistic flood management in Fiji.

Dr Reddy said mitigating flood was a priority because they caused a huge amount of social and economic loss in the country.

“It is time now that we move away from being reactive to flood disasters to actually implementing specific activities aimed at mitigating flood risks,” he said.

He said the team would work with the Ministry of Waterways and Environment to further strengthen its flood management activities and better coordinate interventions for Fiji.
