The Government and Fiji Sports Commission handed $550,000 to the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) for their support and assistance towards the Fiji Airways Drua’s preparation and participation in the Australian National Rugby Championship.
The Fiji Sports Commission delivered this grant at the Fiji Rugby Union office in Suva yesterday.
The grant were separately given as $300,000 for preparation and participation and $250,000 for the hosting of the four home games.
FRU CEO John O’Connor said the partnership was very important for the development of rugby in the country and it had ensured that the players receive the best preparation.
“This great assistance supports the development of rugby in Fiji and the creation of pathways for our local-based players,” said O’Connor
“The grant could not have come at a better time as it has supported the preparation of the team and has enabled us to facilitate an elite environment for them to compete both in Australia and locally.
“The grant has really boosted the team which has inspired them to success in their three home games and likewise winning one match on the road in Australia.”
The chairman of the Fiji Sports Commission Peter Mazey said the Fiji Airways Drua was sailing on its journey well and the team had been a good ambassador of Fiji either playing at home or in Australia.
“The commission looks at the Fiji Airways Drua during the NRC as one of the success stories and we are focused to develop the sport,” he added.
“As we all know what rugby means in this country and we have a lot of successful players at international level as well as our local players. “We are focused to groom our development squad and now we are happy to be able to contribute in the success of the team.”
Meanwhile, this is the second year of participation for the Drua in the NRC.
