She is just 18 years old and working as a cleaner in Lautoka until she can save enough money to pay for own tuition fees to get a higher education.

Dikinisa Curu, originally of Waisasavu in Naitasiri, has had a rough start in life after her dad died when she was just in Year 3.

She is the youngest with four other sisters and the closest to her dad.

She says she remembers fondly his cuddle and taking her with him everywhere.

She said her father suffered a stroke and died which was a big loss to the family.

He was also the sole breadwinner and months after his passing her mum remarried.

Dikinisa said her mum needed someone to help support them and take care of the family.

She says it was tough losing the sole breadwinner and it was very difficult having to cope with a new dad after just losing one.

“My world became dark when my dad died. I was in Year 3 at Vunidawa Sanatan Primary School.

“I have four sisters older than me. I was the one in the family closest to my dad. I recalled crying a lot after his death.

“After his death I spent a long time putting the missing pieces of my life together and the road for the family only became financially tougher,” she said.

Dikinisa is employed at Eagle Cleaning company based in Lautoka. She said she wanted to complete her education, but it was too costly for her family.

“I was educated at Vanuakula Catholic Mission School before my mum took me to Vunidawa Sanatan Primary School.”

Dikinisa said over the years her older sisters got married and moved on and her mum had two other children.

She said she continued schooling but the financial constraints were too much of a burden for the family.

“After I sat my exam in Year 12 I came to Suva for a holiday job and worked at Trendy Fashions while I waited for my exam results.

“We were really struggling to make ends meet and I noticed the struggle on the faces of my mum and my stepfather, that’s when I decided not to continue with school and find a job.

“I work as a cleaner and I’m saving money for my tuition fees next year so I can attend university.”

Dikinisa wants to be an engineer in the future and she also wants to help her younger sister and a brother access a better education and secure a good job.

“I don’t want to be a burden to my parents because they are not working and staying in the village.

“Even though I’m far away from them living in Lautoka I have to deal with it and remain strong.

“Marriage is not in my mind yet because I have to work hard enough to be a better person before I can find a good husband.

“I have to work hard to help my parents as well and when I return to school, I’ll study hard to achieve my goals.”
