Financial problems, misogynistic remarks and the cost of sporting equipment did not stop Vika Nakacia, and her relentless determination has paid off, after being named in the 13-member Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s squad to Dubai.
The 25-year-old Yasawa native relentlessly pursued a spot in the team during her stint in the extended 28-member training squad and was vying for a place to Dubai, which has now come into fruition.
Her journey in rugby started with a switching of codes from rugby league to union in the year 2020.
Her progression was not without its fair share of barriers, as Nakacia lamented the setbacks she endured most, particularly the criticism she faced when playing a sport others had deemed as “a man’s game”.
Besides the misogynistic slander, financial problems and the burden of fielding the cost of relevant sporting equipment had also exhausted her determination to excel.
“When I started, my family didn’t fully support me because I didn’t finish high school. But when I was selected for the extended squad, they were really proud,” she said during her time with the training squad.
Nakacia credited her cousins for introducing her to rugby league and inspiring her love for the sport, which ultimately led her to leave school and pursue her passion.
Looking back on her journey considering her inclusion into the Dubai squad, she encouraged other female players to follow their dreams if they wished to play rugby.
“To women facing critics, trust yourself and the Lord. If you want to play rugby, go for it,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Dubai 7s begins this Saturday. The Fijiana side is pooled with Australia, China and Ireland.
