THE Vodafone Super Deans is more than just a competition for Cuvu College.
The side mounted a late comeback to deny Ratu Kadavulevu School 23-20 in a dramatic under-18 showdown at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Trailing 19-13 at halftime, Cuvu came into the second spell with renewed determination scoring two unconverted tries to clinch the lead.
RKS only managed a three-pointer in the second half.
Both teams were left confused after the final whistle when RKS kicked the ball out thinking they had won.
The players of both teams were celebrating until the FSSRU officials corrected an error on their part which could’ve handed RKS the win and Cuvu wrongfully denied.
“I’m really proud. We give thanks first and foremost to the Almighty. My heart cries out for them (players), we in Cuvu believe in rugby as a career and this win has opened doors for our boys to do something with their lives,” Cuvu College principal Manoj Vikash said as tears rolled down his face.
The principal couldn’t hold back his tears signifying how much the win meant to them.
“I’m very emotional because the boys played really well and our coach made some decisive calls. We thank the parents for their support which pushed the team further. In Nadroga rugby is in our hearts so this is a pathway for our players to achieve something better in life,” he added.
Coach Samisoni Navatu shared the secret to their changed performance in the second half.
“I told them just to believe in themselves and what they can do. They have been through the program for a really long time and I just told them to believe in themselves and play our style of rugby, the result will come by itself.”
Navatu acknowledged all their supporters that woke up in the early hours if yesterday morning to make the trip down to Suva to support their sons.
