The Fijian Government has declared the COVID-19 pandemic as a natural disaster for the whole country.
In a Government Gazette dated April 15, 2020, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said the declaration was made by Cabinet in exercise of the powers conferred on them by section 17 of the Natural Disaster Management Act 1998 and on the advice of the Emergency Committee.
The declaration is effective for a period of 30 days with effect from yesterday – Wednesday, April 15, 2020.
Mr Bainimarama said the Government made the declaration because it was clear “we need to bring every resource in Government to bear to take on the crises of contagion and climate change before us”.
