Rubbish is being dumped on Tovata Rd in Makoi, Nasinu, but it is unclear who is responsible.

The residents and the Nasinu Town Council are blaming each other.

Resident Hari Ram says despite repeated efforts to inform the Nasinu Town Council of the problem, the trash continues to pile up with plastic bags and diapers blocking drains.

He said a report was lodged with the council of rubbish being dumped outside his property in February this year.

“Nasinu Town Council must collect the rubbish because we pay our rates,” Mr Ram said.

“I have been going to the council office to inform them of the issue but no one seems to bother. Residents from nearby houses also come to dump their rubbish as well.”

Council CEO Anurashika Bari said the residents were not following the rubbish collection schedule.

In response to queries from The Fiji Times, Ms Bari said the residents also had a part to play.

“The council has distributed the green and white collection schedules to all households in Nasinu. The collection involves logistics and we have to plan accordingly. We need a mindset change and civic pride from our valued residents.”

Ms Bari said the Tovata area collection schedule for green waste was on the fourth Monday of each month.

“White waste quarterly collection is the same as the green waste collection schedule for the months of March, June, September and December. The green and white waste were to be placed two days before the day of collection.”

Ms Bari said announcements to residents had been made through hailers, community consultations, advertisements in newspapers and posted on the council’s Facebook page.
