The Warriors have received nearly half a million dollars from the Government as sports bodies get a lifeline through its wage subsidy scheme.
The Warriors have received $485,524.80 for 90 staff, according the the Work and Income Covid-19 wage subsidy website. The scheme has been instigated as a support to businesses struggling as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
That equates to $5392.72 per employee.
It’s the largest payout to a sports organisation under the wage subsidy scheme so far, though a figure is not yet been sighted for New Zealand Rugby.
Two New Zealand Super Rugby franchises have applied for wage subsidies, with the Chiefs receiving $150,000 for 29 staff and the Highlanders $126,532.80 for 18 staff.
Warriors chief executive Cameron George said compared to other league clubs, the Warriors’ staff count is low.
He said there are three teams under the Warriors banner – the Warriors NRL team, Under 18s and Canterbury Cup, all of which have support staff.
Plus there is the commercial team that oversees corporates, sponsorship and membership.
“We’ll assist the players, the staff, everyone, with the subsidy grants we’ve applied for like every other business in the country, ” he said.
