Coach plans ahead

FIJI rugby league coach Brandon Costin believes the Vodafone Fij Bati team has an early chance to gauge themselves after being placed in Pool B with defending champion, the Australian Kangaroos after the Rugby League World Cup 2021 pool draws were conducted at Buckingham Palace, London, England, on the weekend.

“We are in a the same pool with Australia meaning we will have the opportunity to test ourselves early in the Rugby League World Cup,” Costin said.

“We can learn and grow from that experience and ideally finish top two of our pool.”

Alongside Australia, Fiji is also pooled with Scotland and Italy. With Australia in the same pool, and should they progress, Fiji and Australia will not play each other again before the grand final.

“It means we will not play Australia again until the final which is different from the last three World Cups.”

However, Costin believes with Australia no longer an obstacle, it did not mean that the Fiji Bati will reach the final.

“It will require a lot of hard work almost immediately. We need to improve our game over the next 18 months to match Great Britain, New Zealand and Tonga.”
