THE death of 50 people allegedly at the hands of gunman Brenton Tarrant in Christchurch, New Zealand, last Friday has been labelled a “cowardly act on freedom and tolerance” by Opposition leader Sitiveni Rabuka.

“It is a really sad day for all people who have had an association with New Zealand and Christchurch,” the Social Democratic Liberal Party leader said.

“The multiple targets and multiple casualty attacks on people at their places of worship in Christchurch is a sad illustration of the tragedy of intolerance and hate.

“My heart goes out to the families of those killed in this senseless terrorist attack on the people of our great neighbour, at this tragic time.

“My heart also goes out to the leaders and followers of the Muslim faith, we feel your grief and loss. May Almighty God grant you all peace and comfort during this difficult time.

“Our nations must work together and do all we can to prevent future attacks and to keep our people safe.

“The people of Fiji stand wholeheartedly with the people of New Zealand, in solidarity against these cowardly attacks.”

Mr Rabuka also acknowledged the sacrifice and effort of the police, security and emergency services for their efforts to save lives and secure properties around the affected areas and those involved in investigating the terrorist attack.
