THE Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) is calling on the Education Ministry to put on hold all its staff recruitment.

Members of the union in its resolution stated that the ministry must put on hold the recruitment process until the Open Merit Recruitment System (OMRS) was fine-tuned to the needs of the ministry and its stakeholders.

FTU stated that this would mean that the emphasis in the minimum qualification requirement (MQR) was to be based on relevant experience in school leadership, relevant qualifications and proven performance.

The two teacher unions — Fiji Teachers Union and Fijian Teachers Association — had continuously pleaded with the ministry to take into account the proven performance, qualification and years of experience in the teaching field when it is determining teacher promotions.

The Education Minister, Rosy Akbar, had publicly assured teachers and the two teacher unions that seniority was going to be the most important criteria used when determining teacher promotions.

Ms Akbar said the two teacher unions were now working on a matrix where the years of experience, leadership quality and service in the school system would also be taken into account.

The FTU conference continues at the Rishikul Sanatan College hall in Nasinu today.
