The Islands Electric-sponsored Nadi Sports and Social Club Business House tournament started with a bang at the Jetset Town on Thursday night.

Players from the 16 teams packed the club’s greens as competition rolls for five weeks.

The highlight of the first round on Thursday was the introduction of bowling to new players, who mostly were from corporate organisations from around Nadi and Lautoka.

“There was a lot of excitement, especially from those who were introduced to the sport for the first time,” tournament co-ordinator Sanjeet Sen said.

“Most of the players had not seen or touched a bowling ball because they are workers. They are employees of companies which are competing in our five-week business house competition.

“I thank our sponsor Islands Electric Ltd and its director Raymond Singh for supporting the event. There are 16 teams of five players and most of them played bowling for the first time on Thursday.

“Islands Electric’s sponsorship helped us get people to participate in sports to stay healthy, socialise and most of all to help bowling grow. One day one of these new players could represent Fiji. So, a big vinaka vakalevu to the sponsors, the corporate organisations and their staff who are taking part.”

Selected new players were awarded prizes on the first round.

“There was a lot of fun as new players tried the sport. Even two had registered to become bowlers of the Nadi Sports and Social Club. ”

Meanwhile, Lautoka Golf Club professional and newly married Roneel Prakash skipped the VFS-All Golfers team against the former national snooker champion Som Padiachi’s Wild Tigers which won last week’s tournament.

Denarau golf professional Amitesh Chandra and young and upcoming Lautoka junior golfer Roland Singh, the son of former Fiji and Lautoka rep, Dennis, are part of the five-week event.

Meanwhile, the tournament is expected to be stiffer from this Thursday with the inclusion of national reps David Aitchieson, Rajinesh Raju and Kushal Pillay, who returned from the Commonwealth Games last week.
