Torika Boseiwaqa of Ba leaped for victory to claim the gold medal in the girls under-12 long jump event, in the Tuckers Ice-Cream Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Championships last Friday at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
The Togavere, Nadroga lass received her medal following her triumphant jump and expressed her excitement when The Fiji Times spoke to her following the medal presentation.
She relayed her enthusiasm for the win and highlighted how preparation had been for her.
“I am very happy to have won the gold medal,” Boseiwaqa stated.
“We have always been training very hard so that I could win the gold medal.”
Boseiwaqa acknowledged the unwavering support of her parents as well.
Her gold medal win added to Ba’s seven medal streak in the girls division of the championship, where they won two gold, two silver and three bronze.
While Boseiwaqa went home with gold, the silver medal was awarded to Bulou Vunakece of Suva One and Grace Waqarua of Lautoka took home the bronze.
The tally draws comparison to their male counterparts, who won one gold and one silver.
Besides athletics, the year eight student of Ba Sangam Primary School took part in the Ba girls soccer team for the Primary Schools Inter District Competition in October, held in Labasa.
